Founded in 1909 in response to the ongoing violence against Black people around the country, the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People is the largest and most pre-eminent civil rights organization in the nation. The Cherokee County branch #5651B was founded in 2019.
Mission Statement
The mission of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) is to secure the political, educational, social, and economic equality of rights to eliminate race-based discrimination and ensure the health and well-being of all persons.
Vision Statement
The vision of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People is to ensure a society in which all individuals have equal rights without discrimination based on race.
Cherokee County NAACP Branch has the following standing committees:
Legal Redress - investigates all cases reported to it; supervises all
litigation in which the Branch is interested; and keeps the National NAACP and the Branch informed
on the progress of every case. The committee does not provide general legal advice.
Health - works to promote, protect, and maintain the health of minorities and assess the health needs of the community.
Economic Development - implements local efforts and support national programs to preserve and expand economic empowerment among minority groups.
Political Action - seeks to increase registration and voting. Works for the enactment of municipal, state and federal legislation designed to improve the educational, political and economic status of minority groups.
Education - seeks to eliminate segregation and other discriminatory practices in public education.
Membership and Life Membership – works throughout the year to maintain and increase the membership of the Association.
Freedom Fund - plans and conducts fund-raising activities, entertainment, and other projects.
